It was not that she couldn't hold down a relationship; she had several shelves of self-help books saying that she could. It was that she was always falling in love with the wrong man at the wrong time and in all the wrong places. It really was not her fault. Even without a compass she would find them; it seemed their exact coordinates had been implanted inside her head and would activate when they were within range.

There was John, who she met in the dark corner of a bar after accidentally bumping into him while on the way out after finding Len, the man she had been dating for over a month, in the opposite corner of the same bar with another woman. John was in the army, or said he was. She never did get over the trauma of finding out that he was actually married with three kids and lived just on the other side of the city. Then, when Len found out she was seeing John, despite he himself being involved with the wife of one of the local bank managers, he threw a temper tantrum and drove his big-wheeled truck in circles on her front yard tearing it to shreds. Luckily, she had paid up on her insurance and when the agent, Rick, came to give her an estimate, he also gave her his business card with his personal cell phone number. They had a wonderful candlelight dinner a week later and she ended up spending the whole weekend at his house. He even took her shopping because she had not planned on bringing anything with her as it was meant to be ‘just dinner'. The best part was that he did not seem to mind waiting for her to try everything on, unlike all the others, who would just throw their cash or credit cards at her to go and' buy something sexy'.

My dentist looks eerily like Nick Nolte from the movie Mother Night. A Nazi. The man wields sharp metal objects inside people's mouths and has the audacity to look like a Nazi. I do not judge him by this-well, maybe a little, I mean, who can't if you've seen Marathon Man-but he's one of those dentists who habitually asks the patient questions whilst he works on them. Me. While he works on me. While he is literally poking into my business, he'll ask me the sort of conversational wallpaper questions that no one in their right mind actually gives a damn about, like, "What time does your school start?" Right about now I'm thinking, "that depends, is the answer going to change which way you're shining that ridiculously bright light? ‘Cause right now it's pretty much all up in my face."
