from the used-car salesman
on the last business day of the month;
from your child, when you produce
the last popsicle from the freezer
on a hot July day;
from a stripper who is a
single mom, with rent due;
from a lawyer, any lawyer;
from a police officer,
after your explanation of
why you were doing 50 in a 25 zone;
from a politician, any politician;
from that cute person
in front of you in the grocery line,
who has merely noticed
the bird shit on top of your head;
from your professor,
as you beg for extra credit;
from the bank officer,
as you plead to keep your home;
from your doctor, right after
you declare that you haven't felt
this great in years;
from your significant other,
as you proclaim many years ahead;
one smile,
so many different endings.
